Between 1988 and 1989 Tsutomu Miyazaki murdered four young girls in Saitama and Tokyo. He tormented the victims' families with letters. He was arrested in 1989 while attempting to abduct another child. Media coverage of his huge video tape collection contributed to the stigmatisation of anime fans in Japan. Sentenced to death, he was executed in 2008.
