In 1976 Jack Unterweger was convicted of murdering a young woman. In prison he wrote books and poems, winning admiration from Vienna's literary circles, which campaigned for his release in 1990. Once free he worked as a journalist – and killed women in Austria, Czechoslovakia and Los Angeles. In 1994 he was convicted of nine murders; that same night he took his own life in his cell.
