Between 1976 and 1977 David Berkowitz terrorised New York City, shooting strangers with a .44 calibre revolver, often couples sitting in parked cars. He killed six people and wounded seven. He wrote letters to police and the press, signing them “Son of Sam”. He was tracked down in August 1977 thanks to a parking ticket. He is serving multiple life sentences.
