Between 1974 and 1986 Joseph DeAngelo committed a series of burglaries, rapes and murders across California. For part of that time he was a police officer. The case went unsolved for over 40 years until 2018, when he was identified through genetic genealogy by comparing crime-scene DNA with a public family-tree database. In 2020 he pleaded guilty to 13 murders and was sentenced to life without parole.
